Shadows

The directorial debut of john Cassavetes revolves around a romance in nyc between Lelia, a light- skinned black woman, and Tony, a man that is white. The partnership is put in peril when Tony meets Lelia jazz singer brother, Hugh, and finds her racial heritage isn't what he thought it had been. Shot with a mostly nonprofessional cast and crew, Shadows is a work that's widely recognized as the forerunner of the American independent film movement.
