The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

This basic tragedy begins in 1957. A 20-year-old French car mechanic, guy Foucher, has fallen inlove with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, a member of staff in her mother's posh but fiscally embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave in Algeria for a tour of combat, he and Geneviève create love. She becomes pregnant and has to choose between taking an offer of marriage from a wealthy diamond merchant or waiting for Guy's reunite.
