Max and the Junkmen

Max is a detective in Paris who is withdrawn, self-sufficiently wealthy, and irritated by the gangs of criminals whom he is unable to apprehend. In an effort to regain his former prominence and save his honor, he comes up with the idea of recruiting a gang of small criminals, which will be commanded by a person he knows from his past, to rob a bank. Max receives intel from a reluctance captain, and he begins spending evenings with Lilly, a prostitute who is the girlfriend of the group's leader. Lilly is also a member of the organization. He pretends to be a wealthy banker with plenty of money at his disposal and offers Lilly advice on her future. He seems to be alluding to a payroll that goes via his bank. The scheme is successful, the petty thieves believe they are ready for a major score, and the police are in position. What could possibly go wrong with Max's strategy for the ice? Who exactly is caught in the trap?
